DAY TWENTY FIVE

Still recovering from the kitsch-overload of Day Twenty Four, we got back in our ‘monster truck’ for the final leg of the honeymoon roadtrip — San Simeon to LA.

We were going to be staying with Iain’s relatives in Pasadena for a couple of nights so the plan was to use this time to relax: no more hiking up mountains, no more horseriding, no more tandem cycling, and NO MORE DRIVING! (well apart from that 300 mile drive to LA…)

Rather than trying to pack all the Los Angeles sights into our final few days, we decided to spend all our time in Pasadena itself — a place with the relaxed feel of a small college town (housing both Cal Tech and Pasadena City College) and populated largely with scientists and students. We could see why they chose this as the setting for The Big Bang Theory.

We also enjoyed all the Art Deco architecture which reminded us of staying in the Deco Dream back in Portland.

Following the well-worn mantra, “When in Pasadena, do as the Pasadenans do”, we decided to go to the local independent bookshop Vroman’s. We picked up a tray that exclaims ‘You’re a Mess’ along with a Kurt Vonnegut stuffed toy. Essential purchases, I’m sure you’ll agree.

We also visited Norton Simon Museum, an art gallery with an impressive collection of masterpieces including works by Rembrandt, Goya, Cezanne and Van Gogh.

Iain’s favourite works were Edgar Degas’ appropriately named sculptures ‘Seated Woman Wiping Her Left Side’ and ‘Woman Seated in an Armchair Wiping Her Left Armpit.’

To end our visit, Iain’s aunt and uncle took us out for a meal at the local Hawaiian fusion-cuisine restaurant Roy’s. We ordered the Misoyaki Butterfish and the Hibachi Grilled Salmon along with a couple of Roy’s Island Mai Tai’s. Wandering home, our bellies full of incredible seafood and tasty cocktails, we knew this was a fitting end to our honeymoon roadtrip.

And that, dear reader, is the end of our honeymoon blog.

Congratulations on making it to the end. Please accept the following picture of a heart as your reward.
