DAY SIXTEEN
By day sixteen, we couldn’t face any more long-distance drives or whistle-stop tours of tourist sites so we decided to spend the day simply focused on relaxing.
Thankfully, Arcata offers its very own ‘Finnish Country Sauna’ that promises an ‘oasis for those seeking relaxation and peace of mind’ so we booked a private outdoor hot tub and spent the afternoon soaking in the tub and drinking chai lattes.
Strolling back to our apartment, we bumped into some local hippies who wanted to ask questions about Iain’s Sleater Kinney t-shirt — we were disappointed to discover that they just liked the design and had a rather limited appreciation of Carrie Brownstein et al’s oeuvre.
Arcata itself contained lots of quirky and interesting shops and restaurants although unfortunately we had visited on a Sunday when most of them were closed. We were especially disappointed not to get to explore ‘A Shop Full ‘a Stuff’ to pick up some ‘what nots’.
Iain was also sad to discover that we had missed out on the local cinema screening of Evil Dead 3: Army of Darkness.
Nevertheless, as a window sign usefully explained, this town may have been closed but it was still pretty awesome.
